Minister Bo Xilai Met WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy

Minister Bo Xilai met visiting WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy in Beijing on Jun 20. They exchanged views intensively on Doha round talks and relevant issues.

Lamy made a briefing on the progress in Doha round talks and analyzed the prospect and developing tendency. He expressed that since China entered WTO, it played a more and more important role in world economy and WTO. WTO secretariat appraised China’s positive position in the talks and expected China to continue its support and promotion in the key moment.

Bo expressed that in the rising of international trade protectionism, multilateral trade system should be cherished and perfecting. China would keep on playing out its constructive role in the talks.

Bo pointed out that Doha round talks should represent developing round goal. Since Uruguay round talks finished, gap between rich and poor among developed and developing countries enlarged. The new round talks should help in improving current imbalance of world economy and bringing benefit to the developing countries. Meanwhile, the talks should benefit for promoting a more opening global trade, especially raised market entrance opportunity for the developing countries.

Bo said that China has made positive contributions for promoting the talks. China, though its applied rates in line with bound rates, still participated in the tariff reduction talks with enthusiasm and played a positive role. It not only represented Doha round’s developing spirit, but also promoted opening spirit in multilateral trade system. He stressed that China was a developing country with over 70 million peasants so that the agriculture was a key issue. After entering WTO, China has broadly enlarged opening in agricultural field adhere to the commitment. In this session of talks, China would obtain guarantee on its special concern of some agricultural produce, which was coordinating with the spirit of Doha developing agenda on care of some agricultural produce for developing countries.

Lamy expressed that China played as a bridge in the talks which brought benefit for multilateral trade system. China was still a developing country and has undertaken some key measures on opening in agriculture. He showed understanding on China’s special concern on agricultural produce.
